The RSA welcomes Alan McGowan as the 2nd Ego Artist in Residence

On Monday 9th September Scottish contemporary artist Alan McGowan will take up residence in the Ego to create a self portrait inspired by the exhibition.
Come along to see the artist in action and learn more about portraiture in contemporary art.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Alan McGowan is a figurative painter based in Scotland. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and completed his post-graduate studies at the University of Northumbria.

In 1997 he produced a suite of large scale charcoal drawings as illustrations to “Faust” by Goethe which was exhibited and toured within the UK. Since that time he has been actively involved in exhibiting painting in Scotland and in London. He has also exhibited in Italy, Finland, Portugal, South Korea, the Czech Republic and the USA.

He was the recipient of the Wood Award, Visual Arts Scotland annual exhibition 200; the Bowie award for painting, Paisley Institute 2004; and selected for Nude 4, International figurative art exhibition 2012, Manifest Gallery, Cincinatti. His works appear in private collections in the UK and in the USA, Norway, Switzerland, India and Ireland. He is currently based in Edinburgh and his work is represented by Gallery Heinzel in Aberdeen and the Kilmorack Gallery in Inverness.

He has taught part-time at a number of art schools, teaching drawing, painting and anatomy for artists at The University of Northumbria, Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art in Dundee, Edinburgh College of Art, Hull School of Art, The Bristol School of Drawing and Leith School of Art Edinburgh.

In 2012 he published a book of drawings “The Language of the Body” (isbn 9780957242807).


Ego: Awaiting your Interpretation is an interactive exhibition of self-portraits from the Royal Scottish Academy collections. It is on display in the RSA Friends Room until 30th September 2013
